Domestic Chainsaw Operator
This course is aimed at the small woodland owner, the greenwood craftsman and those of us who wish to make our own firewood.
Course Content
- Saw sharpening
- General chainsaw maintenance
- Trouble shooting
- Safe starting
- Cross cutting timber
- Use of bore cuts
Interest in all of these areas is growing but buying wood either for projects or for fuel isn't really a cheap option. However it is possible to purchase wood for significantly less if you buy by volume and convert it yourself using a chainsaw. The downside of this is that the chainsaw is one of the most dangerous pieces of hand held machinery used to day and the consequences of getting it wrong can be devastating. Fundamental training is therefore a must to avoid potentially serious injury. With sufficient training, this piece of kit can really become a boon!

What's it about?
The course covers all significant maintenance of the petrol driven chainsaw. Particular emphasis is placed on sharpening and the aspects of maintenance which on the one hand, keeps the saw in a safe useable condition and on the other saves you money in workshop fees.
You will also have the chance to use your machine and by the end should be conversant in safe starting, safe stance and be able to convert timber under moderate tension into the desired length. We will explain the dangers of kickback and show you how you can safely use the notorious kickback zone of the bar to bore into timber.
Please note you need to provide your own chainsaw and PPE. We may have a chainsaw for loan so please enquire before booking if you do not have one. You will also need sharpening tools - see kit list below for more details.
