British Deer Society Wildlife Tracking

Course Content

We have developed two separate day long workshops exclusively for members of the British Deer Society. We hope that they will be of use in day to day deer management activities but also further members' knowledge of the wealth of wildlife to be encountered during any excursion into the countryside. Neither of these courses are open to anyone outside of the BDS. Wildlife tracking can be separated into two distinct areas, track and sign, the evidence creatures leave behind during while carrying out their day to day lives, and trailing, essentially the stringing together of sign to follow and hopefully see the animal.

Track and sign

A knowledge of track and sign is a must for anyone wanting to know who and what is about on their patch and equally importantly where to sit to get a great view. The course will include foot morphology and identification of tracks, feeding signs, droppings, beds and resting areas, we will focus heavily on the sign left by deer but also cover in depth other mammal groups, birds and perhaps even insects. We will be mixing theory and practical, but will be working fully outdoors for the whole day.

Trailing

Trailing or following the animal takes the passive waiting out of wildlife encounters and puts the tracker firmly on the ground actively searching. It is a wonderful skill that immerses the individual firmly in the environment. To be successful, one must train oneself to notice everything. Frustrating at times, certainly, but immensely satisfying when it comes together. The ratios are kept small for trailing workshops with no more than one tracker per 6 students.
