Why choose us?

The natural history aspect of Bushcraft is something we excel at! It was the route in to the subject since childhood for John and many of the team who have studied tree, plant and fungi identification formally through Merrist wood college, the Field Studies Council and with many noted individuals including mycologists and botanists. Our support staff have all been trained through our leadership programme where huge emphasis is placed on this aspect. Choosing to learn this subject from us means you will be taught by real experts passionate about the subject and nature as a whole. You can also be assured that we have tried the things we talk about and are not just repeating the experience of others.

Course Reviews

Melvin Robertson

29th April 2012 - Woodcraft School

“A thoroughly enjoyable course. Very well conducted. I personally had no previous knowledge on plants and foraging but John catered for that and I left with my mind swimming in good information. Even with the torrential rain all morning i still had a brilliant day. I am on a Mushroom course later in the year and can't wait to return. I can't think of anything else to say other than "Brilliant" worth it in every possible way. Thank you very much!"

“Absolutely brilliant. The weather wasn't the best but I personally didn't mind and it added to the experience. As a survival instructor in the RAF I took onboard a number of points and plant types to pass on to my students. Stinging nettles, Dock, Burdock and Cattails being my choice to pass on for their protein and carb capabilities. Looking forward to the Fungi course in September. PS, The lunch was superb and Melvin has eaten all the Nettle Pesto you gave him!!"

What's it about?

This course is aimed as an introduction to the world of wild food, focusing specifically on the plants and trees. We will also explore their myriad of other uses such as providing cures for ailments, refreshing drinks, or maybe something to clean your teeth with!

A key skill to finding wild food lies in knowing where to look and the wild food expert can enter a different habitat and grasp immediately the possibilities that area has to offer.

Different species are found in varied habitats and our day will explore woodlands and hedgerows, wetlands and lakes, farmland and disturbed ground.

The day consists of a non strenuous walk to identify and gather edible species followed by a late lunch and a chance to taste the wild foods gathered.

We will amaze you with what you can find if you know where to look: bark, roots, leaves, and flowers can all have wild food applications beyond your imagination.

Peeling back the layers of both perception and our own heritage opens your eyes to the wonders of nature and a walk in the countryside will never be the same again!
