What's it about?

This programme is designed to illustrate how an animal carcass can be utilised to the full. We will demonstrate the butchery of a complete deer and transform the various elements of these noble creatures into usable products. We believe that the taking of an animals life should be respected by wasting nothing, just as our ancestors and countless native people would have done.

Working in pairs you will be given a skin to prepare and transform into buckskin. You will also experiment with the other materials obtained by the process.

We will show you how to harvest and prepare sinew and how to turn the left over pieces into hide glue. On the menu is venison, the ultimate healthy meat!

Note All of the deer for this course will have been obtained locally as part of sustainable deer management practices aimed at maintaining healthy populations and to conserve valuable woodland and wildlife habitat.
