The Approach: Getting Close To Wildlife

Course content

This course is designed to equip the naturalist with the skills and strategies needed to get close to wildlife. Techniques taught lead directly on from wildlife trailing when it’s important at some point to consider coming off the trail and starting to look for the creature. However this is a standalone course, regardless of your experience with tracking animals. These techniques are applicable to anybody with an interest in having closer encounters with wild animals. They are also applicable pretty much anywhere in the world and work across many species.

Animals have keen senses and are very well equipped to avoid our best attempts at getting close to them. Outwitting sensory abilities of wild creatures requires working in in several disciplines. Exploring techniques in movement, camouflage and observation is part of the equation. Understanding behaviour and habits wildlife another, but to be reliably successful also requires knowledge of terrain wind patterns and air currents. We also explore the use of equipment that aids our chances of making close connections with animals including the use of binoculars and thermal imaging equipment.

We will focus on this course on deer because they are very alert and hard to approach and yet provide an ideal subject to test these skills upon. This is very much a hands on practical course with a series of fun exercises, theory and practical in the field approaches on wild animals.

To be successful this course is limited to 8 people and we will be working after dark on the second evening.
